Indonesia minister threatens to shut down X over adult content

The communications minister of Indonesia said on Friday that the country is ready to shut down social media site X if it doesn’t follow a law that bans adult material. Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population in the world, has strict rules that make it illegal to share lewd material online.

Arie Setiadi, the minister, told Reuters that he had written X a letter of warning about this.

If someone shares pornographic material, they can get six years in jail under Indonesia’s Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE) law, he said. “We will shut down its benefits.”

His words in an interview come after the social media site recently changed its rules to allow adult content that was made with consent.

Budi said that X, which is owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has not replied to Indonesia’s warning letter. He also said that the government would send more letters before choosing whether to close the company.

Number-crunching company Statista says that X has 24.85 million users in Indonesia, which means that a lot of people there use social media.
