A Russian internet provider was almost completely destroyed by Ukrainian hackers.

Ukrainian hackers managed to nearly destroy a Russian internet provider.

A Ukrainian hacker group is conducting a major cyberattack on the Nodex Internet Service Provider in Russia. With this attack, complete disruption and destruction of the network came to pass. The company confirmed the incident on the Russian social network VK, where it mentioned that the operations “were destroyed.” Currently, Nodex is trying to restore operations from offline backups.

The attack was claimed by the Ukrainian Cyber Alliance. According to them, the systems of Nodex were looted and completely cleansed, leaving behind empty racks devoid of any backup data. Furthermore, the group posted what might appear to be the screenshots of proof of access to Nodex’s internal systems.

Cyberattacks have always been utilized by different countries, and those infamous for using cyberattacks include Russia and North Korea. Often these countries focus on attacking their own infrastructure to disrupt systems and steal crypto to finance costly projects, including nuclear weapon development. Now, it appears that this Ukrainian group specifically targets disruption of Russian operations. This cyber attack is yet another front in this war as the physical fight continues.

Currently, Russia has ambivalent thinking to block its citizens from international connectivity with the rest of the world. Whether it may do so ultimately is under discussion vis-a-vis the controlled internal network, the links and access outside the content of the information that is accessible by people.

Just last year, Roskomnadzor, the regulatory authority of the internet in Russia, sometimes restricted the general access of the whole world for one day in some regions, particularly in those places with a high population of Muslims. A sharp increase in the state’s censorship program is being directed primarily to YouTube now to inhibit people’s perspectives about the war against Ukraine.

Russian national cyberspace will have automatically diminished the effectiveness of any such cyberattack spearheaded by Ukrainian groups, considering that Russia has positive plans of disconnecting its internet service providers from other global networks. Such attacks may now become less effective when the cyber landscape gets cut off from any external influences.
