According to reports, X is now following the Supreme Court of Brazil’s demands.
Brazil barred Elon Musk's platform because, among other reasons, it did not take action against hate speech.
X is reportedly changing its stance after weeks of noncompliance with the conditions established by the Brazilian Supreme Court, which are necessary for the company’s operations in the country to resume. As reported by The New York Times, the legal representatives of X indicated in a court filing on Friday that the company has appointed a legal representative in Brazil, as mandated by Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
Additionally, X has taken steps to eliminate accounts identified by the judge as posing a threat to democracy and has settled outstanding fines. However, the Supreme Court of Brazil has stated that X has not submitted all required documentation and has been given a five-day deadline to rectify this.
The missing documentation pertains to the formal appointment of a legal representative in Brazil, a requirement under Brazilian law, as noted by Reuters. In the recent filing, X designated Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its new legal representative.
The company has been striving to restore its services to Brazilian users following a blockage that occurred at the end of August, with a brief reactivation earlier this week through Cloudflare’s DNS, which it described as “inadvertent and temporary.” An X spokesperson indicated that while the platform is expected to become inaccessible again in Brazil shortly, efforts to collaborate with the Brazilian government for a swift return are ongoing.
Brazil has warned X and Starlink of potential daily fines nearing $1 million for noncompliance, and Justice Moraes has also imposed fines on users in Brazil who attempt to access X via VPN. The recent actions taken by X represent a significant move towards resolving the ongoing issues and potentially reinstating its legal presence in Brazil.
