Apple AirPods assist law enforcement in finding a $575,000 stolen Ferrari.

Apple AirPods help police locate stolen Ferrari worth $575,000

Authorities in Waterbury, Connecticut, successfully recovered a stolen Ferrari valued at over $500,000, thanks to a pair of Apple AirPods inadvertently left by the vehicle’s owner.

On September 16, the Waterbury Police Department (WPD) received a report regarding the theft of a Ferrari 812 GTS from Greenwich, Connecticut, with an estimated worth of approximately $575,000. The WPD’s Auto Theft Task Force was able to locate the vehicle utilizing the owner’s Apple AirPods, which remained in the car at the time of the theft.

The $129 wireless earbuds from Apple feature tracking capabilities through the Find My app, enabling law enforcement to pinpoint the location of the stolen Italian supercar. The AirPods can transmit their location to an iPhone when it is in proximity.

According to WFSB, the stolen vehicle was discovered near a gas station on South Main Street in Waterbury. Although the suspect fled when police attempted to stop the car, he left his iPhone inside the stolen Ferrari.

Using the iPhone found in the vehicle, police identified the driver as 22-year-old Dion Schontten, a known repeat offender. On September 26, he was apprehended while driving a stolen Acura.

While AirTags are commonly used for tracking lost or stolen items, in this instance, it was the combination of two different Apple products—AirPods and an iPhone—that facilitated the swift resolution of the case. Had the Ferrari’s owner not forgotten their AirPods, and had the suspect not abandoned his iPhone, the police may not have been able to resolve the matter as efficiently.
