The Optimus robots at Tesla’s Cybercab event were humans in disguise

Last week, it was an out-of-this-world Tesla Cybercab event as it showed Optimus robots through an interactive presentation that left the onlookers literally dumbfounded. Humanoid robots poured drinks, played games with the onlookers, and even danced with them in a gazebo for amusement. More amazingly, it talks-which is something from an unthought-of dimension in interaction. It was more of an event to please the audience than to introduce the real high technology.

One attendee, Robert Scoble, posted thoughts from the event about how the humans were “remote assisting” and that, in fact, the machines were not operating independently. Besides this, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas also spoke of how the robots “relied on tele-ops,” or human help, to get things done. In this way, though the robots appeared autonomous, much effort by humans was involved from behind the scenes.

The Optimus robots each had a unique voice, and they answered questions quickly; their gestures helped to enhance their speech responses. Still, it was easy to see almost immediately that Tesla wasn’t trying to make a case for the robots operating independently. In fact, a humorous moment was caught on video when an Optimus robot joked with Scoble, teasing him playfully after he asked how much of the robot was controlled by AI. Another robot-at least another person controlling the voice of another robot-also responded in an incredibly awkward, artificial tone to defend not being completely autonomous:.

Ever since Elon Musk once invited a person in a robot suit to the stage, creating a thrill over the idea, a Tesla humanoid robot has been in the fray. Put this way, the presentation of the Optimus robots during this event almost seemed a bit excessive, an extravaganza no different from a Magic Show. While at the same time, nothing suggested that the audience felt disappointed or cheated-more correctly, they knew what the show was all about. Those who were looking forward to a real impression of how far Tesla had come with their work on humanoid robotics did not gain from the “We, Robot” event.
