Big, tiny, or slim? Apple never quite knew what to do with its fourth iPhone.

The amazing iPhone that is expanding and contracting

There have already been stories that the iPhone 17 Slim, which will replace the iPhone Plus in 2025, will be a Slim variant. According to a recent report by supply chain specialist Ming-Chi Kuo, the company’s amazing shape-shifting non-Pro iPhone may soon undergo another evolution, supporting past assertions.

Kuo confirms that it will have a 6.6-inch screen and says that the company’s own in-house 5G technology will be paired with just one rear-facing camera. According to Kuo, the Slim model indicates “new design trends beyond the existing iPhone lineup” rather than serving as a straight successor to the Plus. That is consistent with reports that its price might surpass the $1,200 Pro Max.

Apple has struggled mightily to come up with a design for the second iPhone in its lineup that isn’t a Pro. It was Mini at first. That became Plus because it didn’t sell well.

The solution is to completely scrap it. Kuo claims that the Plus “only accounts for 5–10 percent of new iPhone shipments” and that Apple has decided to stop selling the Plus in favor of its other high-end models. The Slim is in and the Plus is out as of (maybe) next year.

It all seems like a “Is this anything?” exercise that goes on for years. Since Apple wants us to update our iPhones more frequently and owners are holding onto their phones longer than they used to, the company is constantly revolving the Price is Right wheel to see whatever combination of size and features will set off the powerful upgrading cycle once more. It was not a tiny phone, nor was it a large phone.

If AI isn’t able to accomplish that, perhaps Skinny Phone will.

I’m all for a thin iPhone, myself. I can’t wait to stuff it in my back pocket, forget about it, and snap it in half. The next time I’m at a birthday celebration and we need a knife to cut the cake, I could even flaunt it like a Swiss Army knife. Perhaps I’ll acquire two thin iPhones, glue them together like a book along their long sides, and create the first-ever folding iPhone. All I’m saying is that we shouldn’t let this restrict our creativity.

In all probability, the iPhone Slim would only be the most recent example of Apple’s focus on thin gadgets. That’s awesome! However, I’m hopeful that this is only a prelude to the real folding iPhone, which just so happens to be making a reappearance in the rumors. When compared to an ordinary old iPhone, a clamshell-style folding phone such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or the Motorola Razr would provide significant advantages. And Apple has to reconsider if it thinks I’ll trade in my cherished little iPhone 13 Mini for anything less.
