Bluesky’s “Starter Packs” are being adapted by Meta’s Threads.
Meta’s Threads is developing its own take on Bluesky’s ‘Starter Packs’
There’s a great thing cooking at Meta: a new feature inspired by the famous ‘Starter Packs’ of Bluesky. Indeed, the reason people love these Starter Packs so much is that they have well-curated lists of users from which new users can easily select whom to follow.
Much of this will be the gist of Meta’s idea: suggesting profiles based on other users’ choices on the platform Threads. Such screenshots supposed to prove that the feature is still very much under development. Threads, in other words, closely ties to Instagram and leverages this existing user base straightaway for avenues to follow.
On the other hand, however, Bluesky needed a way for new users quickly to find what was interesting and community members; hence, Starter Packs were born. This has, however, become such a widely popular aspect that even websites like Blueskystarterpack.com sprang up thrumming with the idea of enabling users to browse and search through everyone’s Bluesky Starter Packs in a database.
Threads doesn’t really need Starter Packs, and it has added help with connecting to Instagram users. Since both Threads and Instagram are part of Meta’s family of apps, the new app can capitalize on using different signals all these apps have to make suggestions about who might be interesting to follow.
Starter Packs have taken over Bluesky, possibly representing a headache for Meta. They may want to address how easily users come and create themselves about the site. The potential to quickly forge ties and be part of a growing platform is attractive, and Meta may want to create similar experiences for Threads users.
