Elon Musk says that the October date for the Tesla Robotaxi event has been confirmed.
In order to "show off a few other things" and make "an important design change to the front," the CEO requested more time.
On Monday, Elon Musk said that the August robotaxi event by Tesla had been rescheduled until October. The CEO said he “asked what I think is an important design difference to the front, and the extra time allows us to guide off a few other things” in response to a user’s post on X, the old Twitter that he controls.
Musk seems to be repeating what Bloomberg published last week in his X article. On July 11, the magazine made the allegation that postponing the event would allow Tesla to construct more prototypes. The business had informed staff members about the delay, it said, and the design team had been instructed to “rework certain elements of the car,” which appears to be an instruction from Musk to alter the front end of the vehicle.
Early in April, the CEO said that the Tesla Robotaxi will be unveiled on August 8. The teaser was released on the same day that Reuters revealed Tesla was abandoning its $25,000 budget model—which is frequently known as the Model 2 outside of the company—in favor of a full-court assault on robotaxis. Musk said that Reuters was “lying,” but he did not specify what exactly went wrong.
A few weeks later, Tesla laid off “more than 10 percent” of its then-over 140,000 employees. The electric vehicle manufacturer made rid of two top executives two weeks after news of the layoffs surfaced, and Musk issued a warning to workers, saying, “We need to be hardcore about headcount and cost reduction.” “While some on exec staff are taking this extremely, most are not yet doing so,” he said, saying almost like a threat.
Compared to the same period in 2023, Tesla manufactured approximately 15% fewer vehicles in the second quarter of 2024 and delivered approximately 7% fewer vehicles in the first half of 2024.
