European Federation of Journalists to stop posting content on X

The Federation of European Journalists (EFJ), in what could be deemed a historic announcement, has declared that it will shape its future activity on social media or, in this particular case, on the platform owned by Elon Musk, the X. Starting January 20, 2025 – coinciding with Trump’s inauguration as 47th President of the USA – the EFJ will stop transmitting all content through this platform.

And the organization is worried about serious ethical issues in participating in what it sees as a “platform, transformed into a vehicle for disinformation and propaganda”. The EFJ, representing the largest organization of journalists in Europe, advocates for more than 295,000 journalists across 44 countries.

Journal of the European Fair Trade Association, carry out a front deal on the dangers presented by the collaboration between Trump and Musk to the approach of democratic ideals and freedom of expression. Musk, who runs X, is said to be in charge of a newly formed “Department of Government Efficiency”, which many would interpret as going to be a powerful voice in Trump’s administration. This raises alarm bells of how misinformation is going to penetrate through the public’s most popular corridors. Maja Sever, president of the EFJ, said X has increasingly become a platform where conspiracy theories flourish and where far-right ideologies, instances of racism, and misogyny reign supreme.

The EFJ has decided to take the step of suspending its official account, @EFJEUROPE. Besides, the organization has persuaded all its members and other people who believe in the principles of freedom of expression to switch to other social media platforms. The dec.ision of stopping activities on the @EFJEUROPE account was worded well to suit the commitment of upholding journalistic integrity and the values they defend.
