For whatever reason, X changed the water pistol emoji to a standard gun.

X replaced the water pistol emoji with a regular gun for an unknown reason.

X has chosen to return the pistol emoji to its original form before Twitter changed it to a green and orange water cannon some years ago. The modification was revealed last week in a post by an X employee.

Though Elon Musk’s social network seems to be fitting for the transition, the corporation hasn’t explained. In 2018, Twitter reversed its emoji to show a water cannon, uniting the likes of Facebook and Google. (Apple switched in 2016, with Microsoft holding out for a little while.)

The platforms eventually led the Unicode Consortium, which determines which emojis are created in the first place, to formally rename the gun emoji as the “water pistol”:

Emoji are considered universal because they have common platform identifiers (for example, the water gun is represented by U + 1F52B), which are determined by the Unicode Consortium. However, how each platform owner is portrayed graphically is up to them. That led to the November 2017 resolution of the Great Cheeseburger Emoji Debacle.

The gun will only be visible if you are viewing X on the internet. The mobile app versions don’t seem to have received the update as of this writing, but it should happen eventually.
