Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist revered as the “Godfather of AI,” has starkly revised his prediction about artificial intelligence’s existential threat to humanity. In recent interviews and conference appearances, Hinton now estimates a 10% to 20% chance that AI could lead to human extinction within the next 30 years, a significant increase from his earlier 10% prediction. This alarming adjustment stems from AI’s unexpectedly rapid advancement, which Hinton admits is unfolding “much faster than I expected”.
The Core of Hinton’s Warning: Intelligence Disparity
Hinton’s concern centers on the impending arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI) systems surpassing human cognitive abilities. He paints a vivid analogy: humans will soon be like “three-year-olds” compared to AI’s adult-level intelligence. “We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before,” Hinton emphasized during a BBC Radio 4 interview. “How many examples do you know of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing? Not all AI luminaries agree. Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist and fellow “godfather” of AI, downplays existential risks, suggesting AI “could save humanity”. Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor dubbed the “godmother of AI,” rejects the maternal framing, advocating instead for “human-centered AI that preserves human dignity and agency”. Critics also question the technical feasibility of encoding complex human emotions like maternal care into algorithms.
The Regulatory Imperative
Beyond technical solutions, Hinton urges immediate government intervention. He criticizes tech giants for lobbying against regulation despite allocating minimal resources to safety research. I worry that the invisible hand [of the market] is not going to keep us safe… The only thing that can force big companies to do more research on safety is government regulation,” he told CBS News. He suggests dedicating up to a third of AI computing power to safety, far more than current industry practices.
AGI’s Accelerating Timeline
Hinton’s revised extinction timeline aligns with his prediction that AGI could emerge within 5–20 years—a drastic shortening from his prior 30–50 year estimate.
