How to safely watch April’s total solar eclipse, in person or online

Next month, a total sun eclipse will happen across most of North America. This is a rare and exciting scientific event. The moon will be exactly between the Earth and the sun on April 8. This will block out the sun’s rays, making it dark at dusk and again in the middle of the day.

Thirty minutes of darkness will fall over fifteen U.S. states over an hour, giving people in those states a unique experience. Even though the eclipse is a beautiful sight, you should be careful if you want to see it because not having the right gear can hurt your eyes. There are safety tips from NASA on how to watch the eclipse, and the organization will also show views of the eclipse live for people who can’t be there in person.

How to view the solar eclipse safely

You should never look at the sun straight on, and that goes for before, during, and after a total solar eclipse. If you want to take pictures of the eclipse, check out this tip from Nikon. Looking at the sun with the naked eye, glasses, telescopes, or a camera lens can hurt your eyes very badly. To be secure, you should wear eclipse reflectors. But keep in mind that these are not the same as normal sunglasses. There is a lot more darkness in eclipse glasses than in sunglasses so your eyes are safe.

The American Astronomical Society has warned that some goods sold as eclipse glasses might not meet safety standards. To make sure everyone stays safe, society has made a list of safe solar watchers that everyone should use. There is also more safety advice about sun eclipses on NASA’s website.

You don’t have to wear eclipse glasses to see the event. You could use a pinhole projector instead. Kids will enjoy making this project with you, and it will let them watch the eclipse safely using things you probably already have at home.

How to view the solar eclipse online

A NASA video lets people who live outside the path of the total solar eclipse still enjoy the show. The event starts at 1 p.m. ET on April 8. NASA will track the eclipse from Mexico through the U.S. and up to Canada. They will also show views from along the path of the eclipse and give information about it from experts. You can watch the live stream on NASA’s YouTube page, which also has it in Spanish, or here in the video above.

The eclipse should be a big deal no matter how you see it. “As the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, millions of Americans will be staring up into the sky. Bill Nelson, a director of NASA, told reporters, “It’s a rare sight that we haven’t seen in seven years.” “Eclipses are very powerful. People are moved to feel awe at the beauty of the world by them. Their power not only brings people together on Earth, but it also helps science and finding get further.
