How to Stop X from Siphoning up Your Data to Train Its AI

Ways to Prevent X from Using Your Data to Train Its AI

X, previously known as Twitter, has recently introduced a significant change that has garnered considerable attention. By default, the platform is permitting Grok, its AI chatbot, to utilize our data—specifically our tweets and other interactions on X—without obtaining our explicit consent.

Numerous technology companies, such as Google and Meta, are seeking to leverage our “public” data for the training of their AI chatbots. When users post publicly—rather than through private accounts or direct messaging—these companies regard such content as being in the public domain. This is the stance that X has adopted concerning our public tweets. Fortunately, private accounts and direct messages remain exempt from Grok’s training processes.

It is not surprising that X discreetly revised its terms of service to facilitate this change. However, what is particularly concerning is how major tech companies like X are now utilizing our data to enhance their AI tools without our consent. It increasingly feels as though our privacy is eroding.

On a positive note, although we may have been automatically included in data sharing, we retain the ability to decide whether our public posts are used for Grok’s AI training. Instructions for disabling AI training on your X account are available.

  1. In the X app, tap on your profile icon in the top corner
  2. Select ‘Settings and Support’ and then tap on the ‘Settings and Privacy’ option under it.
  3. Select ‘Privacy and Safety’ and then ‘Grok.
  4. Toggle off the option that lets Grok use your data for training.

If you have been engaging with the Grok chatbot, it is important to note that X also employs your interactions with the chatbot for training purposes unless you choose to delete them. A link to remove your conversation history with Grok is provided; simply click it, and when prompted, confirm the deletion.

Another method to prevent Grok from accessing your data is to switch your X account to private. However, given that many users utilize X to amplify their voices, disabling AI training in the Settings is likely the more favorable option.
