Bluesky acquires half a million additional members in just one day when X modifies the way blocking works.

Elon Musk’s social media platform, now rebranded as X after his purchase of Twitter, has made the formal declaration that it will no longer be possible for users to block others from seeing their content.

This has indeed gone down very badly with many users, and some of them even leave the social network once and for all. It has raised safety concerns for users who, prior to this, could block others as a means of controlling their online interactions and avoiding harassment or other unwanted attention.

In light of the changes going on at X, many are now gravitating to alternative sites, among them one of the most popular: Bluesky. Bluesky is registered as a public benefit corporation and describes itself as a decentralized social media platform. In fact, since the announcement regarding the blocking feature, Bluesky added a half-million new users in just 24 hours. The surge in user sign-ups makes Bluesky one of a few successful alternatives to X since Elon Musk took over the platform.

For now, Bluesky is ranked as the third most extensive microblogging platform in the world after X and Meta’s Threads. Despite being more under-resourced when compared with Threads, which has been integrated with Instagram, Bluesky has successfully courted hundreds of thousands of new users each time there has been a wave of discontented X users looking for a different online experience. That trend illustrates the growing appeal and staying power of Bluesky in the cutthroat world of social media.

The recent milestone of 11 million users at Bluesky is only the beginning; it now eyes what it can do in the future. The success by Bluesky-in attracting users fleeing X-shows a shifting dynamic in social media toward users gravitating toward environments that better meet their expectations and needs for safety.
