In Japan, dating apps are the most popular way to meet a partner, according to a research.

Dating apps most common way to meet a spouse in Japan, study finds

A recent government survey revealed that one in four married adults under the age of 40 in Japan met their partners through dating applications, establishing this method as the predominant means by which couples connect.

Conducted in July, the study is part of the Japanese government’s initiative to explore strategies that encourage younger generations to marry and raise families, addressing the increasing trend of unmarried individuals, and significantly contributing to the nation’s declining birthrate.

The Children and Families Agency has announced plans to enhance collaboration with the private sector to promote dating apps that comply with safety regulations and to raise awareness about their appropriate use.

In an online survey involving 20,000 participants aged 15 to 39 across the country, 25.1 percent of those who married within the last five years indicated that dating apps facilitated their meeting with their eventual spouses. In contrast, 20.5 percent of respondents met their partners through work-related interactions, 9.9 percent connected at educational institutions, 9.1 percent through friends or siblings, and 5.2 percent at social gatherings or events.

The survey further indicated that 56.8 percent of married individuals reported having used dating apps, compared to 26.8 percent of those who are unmarried. An interim report from a panel under the Children and Families Agency, which is examining life planning for younger individuals, noted the growing popularity of dating apps among those in their 20s.

The report emphasized that “Generation Z,” born in the late 1990s and early 2000s, regards dating apps as valuable tools for maximizing cost and time efficiency. While dating applications provide the advantage of facilitating connections at any time and overcoming geographical barriers for individuals in remote locations, many users still harbor safety concerns, as highlighted in the report. Government statistics indicate that the number of marriages in 2023 has dropped below 500,000 for the first time in 90 years, reaching a total of 474,717, marking the lowest figure since World War II.
