In order to improve Internet connection, the Cabinet approved 5G network spectrum.
Ghana to introduce 5G internet connectivity by September
According to Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications, Cabinet has granted its permission for the development of shared neutral 4G and 5G networks for all telecom carriers in the nation. The purpose of these networks is to improve Internet connection.
In addition, she stated that the network will make it possible for more telecommunications businesses to start investing in the nation.
“The larger operators can use it to fill in the gaps so that instead of investing heavily in capital infrastructure that is required, they will invest in the operational expenditure,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said while briefing Parliament on the internet disruption that has occurred in the country as a result of damage brought on by the submarine cable.
She went on to say that “that is the right way we think we should go,” and that is what we are concentrating on at the moment.
Interruptions in the flow
The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization and the National Communications Authority (NCA) were informed of disturbances in the Internet in the early hours of March 14, 2024. These problems resulted in a significant loss of service for Telecel and MTN, two of the most important telecom carriers in the nation.
Based on the findings of the investigations, it was discovered that there had been several interruptions to the underwater cables, which hurt the mobile data and fixed data services of both firms across the country.
The partnership
Because the government possesses considerable digital telecommunication assets, the minister stated that the government was prepared to collaborate with the private sector to provide the 4G and 5G networks.
The government will hold an auction for the 5G spectrum since there are only one or two corporations that can purchase frequency spectrum.
According to her, “auctioning the spectrum will only create more difficult situations for the citizenry with the dominance of one or two telecommunication entities,” and she stated that this will be the case.
