Instagram has introduced a new feature that allows users to include their favorite song of the moment on their profile, similar to MySpace’s songs on profile feature. This feature will enable users to showcase their music taste and promote their favorite bands and artists.
Instagram has been experimenting with this feature for some time, with initial tests spotted in 2022. Facebook has also tried this, with minimal response. However, now, it is available on Instagram, with younger users likely the key target.
The launch of this feature is likely due to Instagram’s desire to add more music elements, possibly with an eye to a future in the U.S. without TikTok. TikTok has become essential for music promotion, and if removed from the U.S., all music promotion work will need to shift elsewhere. Instagram aims to position itself as the best alternative for such work within the social media sphere.
In addition to adding “Add Yours Music” stickers, Instagram has also added music in Notes, song lyrics displayed in Reels, and other music elements.
This addition makes sense in the broader scheme and may prove popular with younger audiences, especially those who aren’t old enough to remember the cringeworthy days of MySpace profile editing. However, it is important to reserve judgment based on people’s music tastes.
