It says a lot that the upcoming iPhone SE may come with Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone lineup will soon be much more fascinating thanks to AI.
Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro is the only option for testing Apple Intelligence capabilities on an iPhone. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in today’s Power On email, while the full iPhone 16 range is anticipated to receive the features this autumn, “you can also bet” that the iPhone SE, which will arrive “as early as the start of 2025,” will have it as well. It could be much more challenging to pass on Apple’s most cheap phone if that is the case.
The whole point of the iPhone SE has been to recycle an old form factor (the iPhone 8, most recently) into a low-cost, moderately powerful phone. That’s Apple’s budget tradeoff, as has always been abundantly clear!
However, there have been long-standing reports that the next SE would have an iPhone 14 chassis, finally dropping the iPhone 8-style chin, home button, and forehead of the pre-iPhone X phones. It may even include a 6.1-inch OLED screen. When you consider that the iPhone 15 isn’t strong enough to support Apple’s on-device AI technologies, it seems like the upcoming iPhone SE will be potent and have a more contemporary aesthetic.
Other anticipated benefits of the soon-to-be-announced iPhone 16 include the action button on the 15 Pro and two cameras, both of which haven’t been leaked for the iPhone SE. However, how much do regular people care about those features? Will people still forgo those savings in favor of the extras found on more expensive iPhones if the next SE has the design of an iPhone 14, performs about as well as the iPhone 16 series, and costs around the same as an iPhone SE? We could find out soon enough, I guess.
