Meta is terminating workers at Instagram, WhatsApp, and other companies.

Meta is laying off employees at WhatsApp, Instagram, and more

Meta, previously named Facebook, was in the news for some time now because it declared that it would go on to lay off people from different departments.

Decided departments which suffered were some of the most used platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram, along with one of the most innovative departments of the company: Reality Labs. This was in tune with the greater restructuring to thin out certain teams inside the company.

Worth noting, the layoffs aren’t en-masse but strategic cuts within departments. All this initiative aligns with the earlier job cuts that Meta had instituted within its Reality Labs division at the beginning of this year. The cuts first began after the company got overly optimistic about growth following the Covid-19 pandemic. Alone in 2022, Meta laid off an astonishing 11,000 employees due to this reason.

Fast forward to 2023, the “year of efficiency” has thus been declared by Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg. In this relentless pursuit of efficiency, the company recently declared a further 10,000 job cuts. These cuts are part of Meta’s effort at rightsizing its operations in positioning the company for sustainable growth beyond this year.

Cuts in highly visible divisions like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs are just but part of Meta’s determination to transform with the times of innovation in social media and technology. As unsettling as this might be to the eyes of employees, these cuts are somewhat needed by the company if it is to remain ahead of competition and give the best user experience possible across its platforms.
