With a varying array of creative instruments, the Edits app was launched by Meta Sunday. This comes shortly after ByteDance’s video editing application CapCut was yanked from both Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store following the current TikTok ban. The app is likely to launch on iOS next month, while an Android version is expected soon afterward.
According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, the app will have multiple creative tools, plus a whole page dedicated to inspiration. The page gives users easy access to brief it with new ideas. There will also be a page where the ideas can be tracked, allowing creators to refine their ideas through constant iterations. Apart from that, in that very own app, there will be a good-quality camera for a better filming experience.
Edits targets video creators and is not generally used for leisurely video makers. This creators-centric approach makes it tricky to assess and see clear metrics that would define the Edits’ impacts. Meta has created such similar offerings for the market from Instagram Reels, Threads, and the likes.
With the existing uncertainty around video editing tools, opportune openings for other applications could emerge: Captions, for example, has moved to a freemium model to capture more users and steal a portion of the audiences. This landscape signifies a change in the competitive field of video editing and content creation.
