Microsoft is testing a new search results page layout that uses AI.

With Bing's AI overhaul, the standard search results list gets pushed aside.

With Bing’s new search interface, AI-generated responses take center stage while conventional search results are pushed to the side. AI-generated summaries covering different elements of your inquiry are displayed on your search results page under the new layout, which is now being tested for a limited set of queries.

An early preview of this search experience, provided by Microsoft, is extensive. In answer to the question, “What is a spaghetti western?” Along with a list of bullet points summarizing the essential elements of the genre, Bing presents a synopsis describing it as a “subgenre of western films produced by Italian filmmakers.”

Although I am aware that this function is still in its early stages, as a Bing and Edge user (yes, we do exist!), I hope that it will be optional or that there will be an off button. It bothers me a lot when search descriptions are cut off after two lines since it makes it harder for me to read through the first page of real search results.

A similar Google feature called AI Overviews replaces the top section of the search results page with summaries produced by AI. Users discovered soon after the feature launched that it gave false results for some queries, requiring Google to edit some of its results by hand.

However, Bing’s new design goes beyond synopses. After reading beyond the first response to the question regarding spaghetti westerns, you’ll get a synopsis of the genre’s beginnings and history in addition to relevant videos, a ranking of the greatest and most influential films, and even music information. That’s a lot of information on one page, sometimes more than you need to know. Each part has a list of Microsoft’s sources underneath it, and all of the links you would typically click on are arranged in a narrow column on the right side of the screen.

Microsoft has said that the new experience integrates both big and small language models with Bing search. According to the business, “It understands the search query, estimates millions of information sources, dynamically matches content, and effects search results in a new AI-generated layout to fulfill the user’s query more effectively.”

Microsoft is considering the possible effect on search traffic as well. “Keeps the number of clicks to websites and supports a healthy web ecosystem,” according to incomplete statistics.
