Musk promises AI chatbot Grok to all X Premium subscribers this week.
Elon Musk says all Premium subscribers on X will gain access to AI chatbot Grok this week
After Elon Musk’s xAI decided to open source its Grok big language model earlier in March, the owner of X said on Tuesday that the firm that was once known as Twitter will soon make the Grok chatbot available to a greater number of paying members. It was revealed by Musk in a post on X that Grok will be made available to Premium users this week. Previously, Grok was only accessible to Premium subscribers who were on the higher-end tier known as Premium+.
Another prominent chatbot, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude, may be the target of this move, which may indicate a wish to compete more directly with them. Nevertheless, it is also possible that this is a sign that X is attempting to increase the number of subscribers it has. Data suggests that fewer people are using the X platform, and it is failing to keep those who are using it. The revelation comes at a time when the data indicates that this happening. X usage in the United States was down 18% year-over-year as of February, according to new data from Sensor Tower, which was published by NBC News. Additionally, X usage has decreased by 23% since Musk’s takeover of the company.
Sensor Tower discovered that 75 out of the top 100 advertisers in the United States on X from October 2022 had stopped spending their advertising budgets on the platform. This suggests that Musk’s assault on advertisers may have also hurt the income prospects of the firm.
It is possible that providing users of X with access to an artificial intelligence chatbot could prevent them from leaving the platform and joining other platforms, such as the decentralized platforms Mastodon and Bluesky, or Instagram’s Threads, which quickly gained traction thanks to Meta’s resources and reached over 130 million monthly users as of the fourth quarter of 2023.
The only thing that Musk said was that Grok “would be enabled” for all Premium members at some point “later this week.” He did not specify when Grok would become available to users of Android X.
The X Premium membership is the company’s middle-tier offering, and it begins at $8 per month (on the web) or $84 per year on average. Before this, Grok was exclusively accessible to Premium+ users, who paid a premium of $168 a year or $16 per month to take advantage of its services.
Because it will react to queries regarding subjects that are normally off-limits to other AI chatbots, such as conspiracies or more controversial political beliefs, Grok’s chatbot may appeal to Musk’s fans and heavy X users. Grok’s chatbot will give answers to inquiries about these themes. Musk has described it as having “a rebellious streak,” and it will also respond to inquiries with that trait. In particular, Grok can gain access to real-time X data, which is something that its competitors are unable to do.
Without a doubt, the value of such data may be decreasing under Musk’s leadership if X is seeing a loss of consumers.
