For users in the United States and France, Netflix is breaking its most affordable ad-free package.

The streaming behemoth revealed the adjustment on Thursday as part of its second-quarter earnings release.

The $11.99 monthly basic package has already been phased out for customers in the UK and Canada. The basic plan was no longer available for new sign-ups by the corporation in July 2023, however, current members were still able to continue using it.

Subscribers to the Basic plan have the option to upgrade to the ad-supported Standard plan, which was introduced in November 2022, for $6.99 per month, or downgrade to the ad-free Standard plan, which costs $15.49 per month. A premium plan is also available for $22.99 a month.

The only plan tier that prohibited multiple users from streaming at once was the basic plan.

When questioned about the outcomes of Netflix’s phase-out of the basic plan in Canada and the UK, co-CEO Greg Peters stated that the Standard with Advertisements plan has been successful since its introduction.

In essence, by offering two streams instead of one, we’re giving them a better experience. We have more definitions. Downloads were received. Naturally, all of this came at a cheaper cost—$6.99 in the US. In our opinion, that offers a great deal of entertainment value. And it has advertisements,” stated Peters. “And of course, members can choose our ads-free standard or premium plans if they like not to have those advertisements.”

In its earnings release, Netflix stated that it has a record 277.65 million consumers worldwide across all of its tier options. The number of new subscribers to the firm has increased following a crackdown on password sharing.
