OpenAI releases ChatGPT for the desktop with a new AI model.
OpenAI releases a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT.
On Monday, OpenAI released a new AI model, desktop version, and user interface for ChatGPT, its latest attempt to broaden its use.
On the livestream, technology head Mira Murati said the upgrade gives everyone GPT-4, including OpenAI’s free users. The GPT-4o model is “much faster,” with greater text, video, and audio capabilities, she said. OpenAI wants to offer ChatGPT video chats.
“This is the first time we are creating a huge step ahead when it comes to ease of use,” Murati added.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI is valued at over $80 billion by investors. Since it spends a lot on processors and infrastructure to construct and train its models, the 2015-founded firm is under pressure to stay on top of the generative AI industry and earn money.
GPT-4o is ubiquitous. Murati said the new model allows ChatGPT to handle 50 languages faster and better, and OpenAI’s API would let developers start creating apps with it now.
She emphasized that GPT-4o is twice as quick and half as expensive as GPT-4 Turbo.
Team members from OpenAI used the new model’s voice capabilities to seek help calming down before a lecture. OpenAI researcher Mark Chen said the model can “perceive your emotion” and tolerate user interruptions. The team also requested it assess a user’s facial expression to determine their feelings.
Hello, how are you? How can I make your day better? Audio mode was mentioned when ChatGPT was greeted.
Voice Mode will be tested in the coming weeks with early access for ChatGPT Plus users, according to a blog post. OpenAI stated the new model can reply to auditory instructions “in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in a conversation.”
Chen showed the model how to narrate a bedtime story and instructed it to seem more emotional or robotic. It was even invited to sing the narrative.
OpenAI stated its new model can translate audio even in audio mode. Chen showed how the technology could listen to Murati speak Italian as he talked in English and translated into their languages.
Team members showed the model could solve arithmetic problems and create code, making it a better rival to Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot.
One of OpenAI’s greatest announcements since August’s debut of ChatGPT Enterprise, the AI chatbot’s commercial tier. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap told CNBC that more than 20 organizations of all sizes and sectors helped build the tool for “under a year”.
OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google are leading a generative AI gold rush, with enterprises across industries using chatbots and agents to stay competitive. Anthropic, an OpenAI competitor, launched its first corporate product and free iPhone app this month.
According to PitchBook, approximately 700 generative AI deals received a record $29.1 billion in 2023, up 260% from the year before. Revenue is expected to reach $1 trillion in a decade.
Some business members are concerned about the speed at which unproven new services are being introduced, while academics and ethicists worry about the technology’s bias.
ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer app in history after its November 2022 launch and presently has 100 million weekly active users. Over 92% of Fortune 500 organizations use OpenAI, according to the company.
At the Monday event, Murati said OpenAI hopes to “remove some of the mysticism from the technology.”
“Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out these capabilities to everyone,” Murati added.
According to a Monday blog post, ChatGPT Plus and Team clients will get the new model on Tuesday, followed by Enterprise. Starting Monday, ChatGPT free users can utilize it with limits. ChatGPT Plus members have five times more message capacity than free users, while Team and Enterprise users have even more.
Murati ended the video by thanking Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his business for supplying OpenAI’s GPUs.
“I just want to thank the incredible OpenAI team, and Jensen and the Nvidia team for bringing us the most advanced GPUs to make this demo possible today,” she added.
