Record Demand for Samsung’s Z Fold 7 Amidst Insured $10M Phone Theft

Samsung’s latest foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, have become the company’s most pre-ordered devices in U.S. history, outpacing all previous Galaxy Z series models. Pre-orders surged by 25% year-over-year, with U.S. carriers reporting a 60% increase compared to 2024’s models. The Z Fold 7 alone is outselling its predecessor by nearly 50%, marking a watershed moment for foldable adoption.

Record Demand Driven by Design and Feedback

Samsung credits the unprecedented demand to refinements addressing years of consumer feedback. The Z Fold 7, now the thinnest and lightest in its category, boasts a 200MP camera (matching the S25 Ultra) and a redesigned cover screen that eliminates the “narrow bowling lane” aesthetic of earlier models. The Z Flip 7’s larger FlexWindow cover display and Coralred color option (25% of pre-orders) also exceeded expectations. Notably, the Z Fold 7’s Blue Shadow color captured nearly half of all pre-orders, dethroning black as the historical favorite.

Drew Blackard, Samsung America’s SVP of Mobile Product Management, stated: “Foldables have reached an inflection point. Now on our seventh generation, we’ve arrived at an experience you can’t get on any other device”.

$10 Million Heathrow Theft and Recovery

While celebrating sales milestones, Samsung faced a major security setback. A truck containing 12,000 devices, including 5,000 Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 units, 5,000 Galaxy Watch 8 units, and Galaxy S25 and A16 models, was stolen from a warehouse near London’s Heathrow Airport. The cargo, valued at $10.6 million (£7.9 million), was located by British police after a swift investigation. Samsung confirmed the devices were insured and will be remotely blacklisted to prevent activation.

This incident echoes past high-value tech heists, including a 2023 Apple Store tunnel robbery and a 2024 Samsung theft in India. Industry analysts note such thefts typically target hot-selling devices for black-market resale.

Samsung’s Anti-Theft Countermeasures

In response to rising global phone thefts, Samsung is intensifying efforts to promote its One UI 7 security suite, now rolling out to flagship devices. Key features include:

• Theft Detection Lock: Uses AI to sense snatching motions and instantly locks the screen.

• Remote Lock: Allows device locking via phone number verification.

• Security Delay: Imposes a one-hour wait before biometric resets in unfamiliar locations, enabling owners to lock devices via a connected gadget.

Annika Bizon, Samsung MX VP for the UK & Ireland, emphasized collaboration with law enforcement: “We’re committed to working with the Home Office to improve user safety. These features reflect our layered approach to security”. Google’s parallel Android theft protections, including AI-based snatch detection and factory reset blocks, complement Samsung’s efforts.

The Foldable Inflection Point

The Z Fold 7’s success despite its $1,999 price signals foldables’ march toward mainstream acceptance. Carrier subsidies (like AT&T’s 55% discount) and trade-in programs have eased entry barriers, while durability improvements (IP48 water resistance, robust hinge designs) alleviate consumer concerns. Tech analyst Philip Berne observed: “Samsung finally corrected past mistakes. The Z Fold 7 feels like a normal phone when closed, erasing the old trade-offs”.

As Samsung prepares for future innovations like rumored tri-fold devices, its challenge remains balancing soaring demand against supply-chain security. For now, the company’s record-breaking U.S. launch underscores that foldables are no longer niche; they’re the new flagship frontier.
