Pornhub pulls out of Florida, VPN demand 'surges 1150%'

On new years day found a massive spike in the demand for VPNs as Pornhub made its site inaccessible to users in Florida. The newly introduced law, which states that new visitors to a site should prove their age to access the site, triggered this response.

The law requires sites to place age blocks on content that has significant harmful material for minors. That is, sites such as Pornhub cannot allow access to a visitor under 18. Noncompliance with this law can attract fines running into $50,000.

Under this Act, Aylo, the parent company of Pornhub, decided to block access to its online services to users in Florida. This is similar to what it had already done in many states that had similar laws on age verification.

Aylo has expressly opposed these regulations by arguing on the premise that they are ineffective. They warned that users could easily bypass these restrictions by finding alternative non-compliant websites or using other methods to evade the age verification checks.

In other states such as Utah and Texas, the surge of VPN service usage is tracked, similar to what was found by vpnMentor.

While other parts of Florida were initiating the use of VPN even before Pornhub decided to block IP addresses from the state. This resulted in an amazing 51 percent increase in the use of VPN in Florida, indicating the impact immediately made by the new law on access and behavior of users in the state.
