Samsung Bets Big on Bold Hardware: Tri-Fold Phone and XR Headset Target Late 2025 Launch

Samsung Electronics has officially confirmed plans to launch a groundbreaking tri-fold smartphone and its first extended reality (XR) headset before the end of 2025. The announcement, made during the company’s Q2 2025 earnings call, signals a major push into innovative form factors designed to reinvigorate its mobile business and outpace rivals like Apple.

The TriFold Advantage

Dubbed the “Galaxy Z TriFold” in internal documents, Samsung’s highly anticipated smartphone features two inward-folding hinges, a deliberate design choice contrasting with Huawei’s outward-folding Mate XT Ultimate. This engineering approach fully encloses the flexible screen when folded, significantly boosting durability by shielding it from environmental damage.

Industry analysts note this could address a key pain point for foldable adopters. Early specifications suggest flagship-tier power: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, 16GB of RAM, and cameras comparable to the current Galaxy Z Fold. An October 2025 launch window is anticipated, positioning Samsung as the first global giant to market with a tri-fold device.

XR Headset Enters the Arena

Simultaneously, Samsung’s XR headset will debut as the world’s first device running Android XR, developed jointly with Google. Targeting spatial computing’s premium segment, it reportedly features Micro OLED displays with 90Hz refresh rates, advanced eye tracking, and passthrough video leveraging Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip to process up to 12 camera feeds. Power will be supplied via an external battery pack, prioritizing weight reduction during use. Samsung stated these devices will “reinforce AI capabilities” and expand its ecosystem amid rising component costs.

Strategic Timing Against Apple

Samsung’s late-2025 rollout appears calculated to seize territory before Apple’s expected foldable iPhone debut in September 2026. Financial analysts at JPMorgan project Apple’s book-style foldable will carry a $1,999 price tag and target a $65 billion revenue opportunity.

By launching its TriFold over a year earlier, Samsung aims to solidify its foldable leadership and force Apple into a follower position. “When it comes to foldable innovation, Samsung isn’t just competing, it’s dictating the timeline,” said tech analyst Rachel Park of ABI Research. “This head start lets them refine manufacturing and build consumer loyalty before Cupertino enters the arena.”

Market Implications

The dual launch underscores Samsung’s aggressive hardware strategy amid semiconductor sector struggles. While its mobile division posted KRW 29.2 trillion (USD 21 billion) in Q2 revenue, chip profits plummeted 93.8% year-over-year. Foldables like the new Z Fold 7 have shown promise, with U.S. pre-orders reportedly 50% higher than its predecessor.

The TriFold and XR headset represent bets that bold form factors can offset commoditization in traditional smartphones. As noted in Samsung’s earnings release, these devices aim to “contribute to maintaining solid profitability despite market uncertainties.”

With its tri-fold design setting a new bar for durability and its XR headset challenging Meta and Apple’s Vision Pro, Samsung is staking its second-half resurgence on redefining how users interact with technology. If execution matches ambition, 2025 could mark its most transformative year in a decade.
