Scarlett Johansson summons the US government to enact laws restricting artificial intelligence, following the release of a deepfake video featuring her likeness. She is part of a collection of Jewish celebrities who have been outspoken against the dangers of AI since that technology was first made available to the public.

In 2023, Johansson filed a lawsuit against an AI app developer for unauthorized use of her name and image in an advertisement. She lay in for OpenAI over a voice very similar to hers that was adopted in its unsupervised ChatGPT mode. It is claimed that she forced OpenAI to retire that somewhat similar voice.

Last year, lawmakers attempted to tackle the issue of deepfakes through the introduction of a bill designed to combat sexually explicit content produced by this technology. Very little has been done about the sweeping regulation of AI. In September 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a significant AI safety bill. Also, President Donald Trump uprooted President Joe Biden’s executive order aiming to set safety guideline standards in the AI vortex. Recently, both the US and the UK declined to sign an international declaration encouraging the ethical application of AI technology.

Johansson points out that the threat of hate speech exacerbated by AI poses a significantly greater threat than any individual potentially held accountable. Johansson believes that there is such reach of AI that it would heighten negative messaging and misinformation, making it peremptory that the government takes action to address this.
