With just a small amount of dried blood, a new test driven by cutting-edge technology may be able to quickly and correctly diagnose three common types of illness.

Early tests of this test showed that it could quickly tell the difference between people who don’t have pancreatic, stomach, or colon diseases and those who do. Scientists found that the test could 82% to 100% of the time tell if a patient was sick by looking at certain chemicals in their blood.

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that is used in this test. It checks for things in the blood called metabolites that are made when the body breaks down food. As “biomarkers,” these molecules, which are found in serum, the liquid part of blood, can help doctors figure out if someone has cancer or not.
