Teens Cannot Use Beauty Filters on TikTok

TikTok Won't Let Teens Use Beauty Filters Anymore

Aside from that, Tik TikTok, perhaps the most broadly used social media platform today, has vowed to limit the use of appearance-mocking effects under the age of 18. This is in line with various lawsuits and studies commissioned with Internet Matters, a London-based nonprofit focusing on the online safety of children.

The company plans to focus their restrictions on effects made solely to change someone’s looks in a not immediately obvious or humorous fashion. Instead, limits will apply solely to filters and effects that can obviously modify an individual’s appearance since this is aimed at alleviating concerns on the part of the viewer as to whether he is seeing a naturals or unaltered version of the user.

Teenage users would still be able to use wondrous enhancements such as animal ears since they shall be barred from using beauty filters when the new age regulations come into effect. Such amendments will have been approved and endorsed by Dr. Nikki Soo, Safety and Well-being Public Policy Lead for Europe at TikTok, for global and uniform implementation on all young users, regardless of where they are located. TikTok is also working towards improving its information on how the effects will change the appearance of the users; however, it is still unclear if this is to be with TikTok solely accountable, or also with the makers of such effects in question.

In addition, TikTok continues its impetus in developing newer intelligent machines to establish strict age-restriction barriers for users below thirteen years of age. The other details regarding the tech are still under the wraps. However, it’s expected to also ensure that any user under the age of eighteen cannot feign to be older than they are.

TikTok should also offer in-app resources in thirteen of these European countries. They will have the resource to connect them to a local helpline for severe issues like suicide, self-harm, hate speech, and online harassment. It also conducted research with Internet Matters that demonstrated beautifying tools seem to turn beauty into unattainable ideas while creating unsought peer pressure; thus, these problems must be dealt with, given the platform’s commitment to user safety.
