Telegram reverses course and joins a kid safety initiative.

Telegram U-turns and joins child safety scheme

The telegram is a messaging app holding nearly 950 million users globally. It recently came into the spotlight due to an amazing cooperation with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) for help in cracking down on working method for combating children sexual abuse material (CSAM).

The IWF is the nonprofit that provides helps for the major online platforms through different tools and support to identify, manage, and remove CSAM and prevent its proliferation online. Up to this date, the telegram had been consistent on keeping its distance from activities held by the IWF or similar initiatives, holding strong to the principle of user privacy and security.

Such positions underwent great changes with the arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder of the Telegram, in Paris four months back. He was arrested based on allegations that the messaging platform has taken no serious measures to track extreme content hosted within its services. Under this circumstance, Telegram announced that it would henceforth partner with the IWF, changing its course on online safety.

The communications from the International Weft Federation (IWF) calling the partnership of Telegram the “greatest of all” go on to assert that this new immersion is merely a footstep in long-extended travel towards making the platform for enhanced safety measures. The sustenance that IWF provides to disclosure to things which guarantee detection methods for criminalization will enable Telegram to ensure that it does not use any of their channels to disseminate CSAM. This feature of the application will have specific importance at this point because Telegram has actually propagated itself as the user-privacy app rather than one that lends itself to a social media approach based on heavy policy enforcement.

Durov was arrested in August while at the airport just north of Paris. The arrest sprang from specific charges that consisted of his failure to cooperate with police on other criminal matters like drug trafficking, child sexual content, and fraud. Consequently, the French judges indefinitely barred him from departing France until the investigations are exhaustively done. Durov has been defended against these accusations, claiming the events leading to his arrest are indeed sordicious and further claiming that he cannot be held accountable for the actions of the users of the platform.

The latest initiative after Durov’s arrest and the consequent scrutiny that Telegram has faced is the partnership with the IWF. One of the very few organizations in the world that are permitted to actively look for and take down child sexual content from spaces on the internet is the IWF. Before this partnership, Telegram acted independently against its problem, removing hundreds of thousands of instances of abusive material every month using its internal systems. This new partnership signifies a further commitment to strengthening users’ safety and a safer online environment.
