LG Display unveils first stretchable display that can grow by 50% — this could be a game changer
In a recent event that created an uproar in the technical field, LG Display has presented a transformational 12-inch prototype that demonstrates the true potential of micro-LED technology. The technology is so advanced that it allows the manufacture of screens which can be pulled apart and also bent and rotated which in turn helps change the view of the display technology.
Thanks to the lightweight and the fact that these displays are curved, there are endless possibilities as they can comfortably fit into any rounded object including clothes and even the skin. This helps open a vast market as these displays are highly flexible across various industries and especially in the areas where mobility, clothing and wearable devices advance technologies are vital.
The course of micro-LED technology, however, has been extraordinary, and quite interesting advances are being observed especially in the last few years. It is also interesting because nearly 2 years ago the world saw the first ever stretchable display. So such development has been breakneck in this category of displays.
Particularly consistent has been LG Display’s wish to make further improvements i.e. chasing some performance aspects of micro display technology even in regards to the properties of a certain type of polymer silicone substrate used eyeglasses contact lenses, etc. and also introducing a new wiring design structure for improving performance better.
There is no denying that the future of these types of flexible displays is very exciting, however, it is necessary to appreciate that there are certain disadvantages associated with them. For example, one of the disadvantages which stand out is image quality, and LG Display admits that these panels may not be up to the level of quality most high-end smartphones are designed with. For example, the micro-LED display has a resolution of 100ppi even when stretched up to 18 inches which is rather lower than what most modern designs.
