The new Mercedes-Benz CLA will use a 2.0T engine built by Geely and other Chinese technology.
All-new Mercedes-Benz CLA will feature a Geely made 2.0T engine and other Chinese tech
According to relevant sources, the next-generation third Mercedes-Benz CLA will be fitted with an advanced 2.0T four-cylinder engine currently under joint development by Geely and Renault through their equally owned cooperation named Geely and Horse.
This powerful 2.0T engine is capable of churning out 250 horsepower with a maximum torque of 360 Nm. This engine will be made in China, but the fitting of the catalytic converter will be done in Germany. For obvious reasons, this is an indispensable step for the vehicle to pass under very strict emission rules.
The latest model CLA will sit on the new MMA architecture. The platform will also facilitate conventional combustion engines alongside mild-hybrid and all-electric propulsion. However, no plug-in hybrid variant is offered on the CLA. One of the highlights of this new model, though, is the introduction of its advanced intelligent driving with Momenta, a startup in China.
The CLA is thus the first Mercedes-Benz car in the world to get urban assisted driving features. Having been founded in 2016, it then again speaks to the excellent partnership between both companies that Momenta had benefited from some early investment by Mercedes-Benz.
Those who go for the full electric variant of the CLA will carry a powerful 175 kW electric motor on the rear axle and an 89.6 kWh battery pack. This strong combination will allow the fully electric CLA to boast an incredible driving range of up to 750 kilometers according to WLTC standards, while it also boasts a stellar energy consumption rate of just 12 kWh per 100 km. The architecture is planned to be featured on the MMA platform at 800V, hence significantly boosting charging capability and enabling it to give extra range to the vehicle to 400 kilometers with just 15-minute charging.
While the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA is expected to make its official entry in 2025, people might not be able to buy a mild-hybrid version of the vehicle before 2026. This forms part of the roadmap for the rollout by the automaker in quest to always introduce new and environmentally friendly vehicles to the market.
