In recent years, the rise of generative AI and chatbots has prompted numerous companies, including Google, to embark on initiatives aimed at developing and training their own AI models utilizing user-generated content and data.

This endeavor has frequently led to criticism and legal challenges. LinkedIn, benefiting from its partnership with Microsoft, which supports OpenAI, has recently rolled out a variety of AI-enhanced features as part of its offerings.

Despite LinkedIn’s proactive communication regarding the introduction of these AI functionalities, the company did not notify users that the default setting for training generative AI models was enabled for the majority of its user base.

Consequently, LinkedIn has been collecting user-generated content and data over the past several months to enhance its services, which now incorporate various generative AI tools, without users being aware of this practice. Furthermore, LinkedIn has a history of similar privacy concerns, such as previously accessing users’ clipboard data without consent.

In this case, LinkedIn not only neglected to inform users about this significant alteration to its privacy policy but also obscured the option to disable this setting within the intricate menu of its website and application, complicating the process for users who wish to opt-out.

To prevent LinkedIn from utilizing your data for the training of its AI models, you should access the platform through a web browser and navigate to the “Settings and Privacy” section by clicking on your profile picture located in the upper right corner. Once in the Settings menu, select the “Data Privacy” tab and search for the option labeled “Data for Generative AI Improvement.”

You may find that this feature is enabled by default. To disable it, simply toggle the switch next to “Use my data for training content creation AI models” to the “Off” position. It is essential to be aware that this option might not be available or could be disabled by default if you are located in the European Union, EEA, or Switzerland.

Additionally, disabling this setting will only prevent LinkedIn from using your data for AI training purposes. For more comprehensive control over the data LinkedIn collects from your profile for other uses, it is recommended to explore the “Advertising Data” tab within the “Settings” menu and adjust the relevant options accordingly.
