Although the developers have stated that they do not intend to make the code for their project publicly available, the demonstration offers a glimpse into a potential future that resembles scenarios previously depicted in dystopian science fiction films.

The creators of this project, AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, are computer science students at Harvard who frequently showcase their technological experiments on social media, which include 3D printed designs and wearable flame-throwers. However, it is their most recent endeavor, highlighted by 404 Media, that is likely to evoke discomfort among many observers.

In a video posted on Instagram, Nguyen elaborates on how the duo constructed a program that processes visual data from Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and integrates it with facial recognition technologies such as Pimeyes. This tool has effectively scoured the internet to locate instances of the individual’s face online. Subsequently, a large language model deduces the probable name and additional information about the individual, which is then cross-referenced with various websites to disclose details such as the person’s home address, phone number, occupation, and even the names of their relatives.

To utilize the device, one simply wears the glasses, which are designed to recognize faces as individuals pass by. Once a face is detected within the frame, the glasses capture an image that is subsequently analyzed, leading to the display of the person’s personal information on the user’s phone within a matter of seconds, as explained by Nguyen in the Instagram video.

Nguyen and Ardayfio have named their innovative project I-XRAY, showcasing an impressive capability to retrieve substantial amounts of information in a remarkably brief period. They emphasize that many of the technologies enabling this functionality have only recently become accessible. For instance, Meta introduced its smart glasses equipped with camera features, resembling ordinary eyeglasses, just last year. Furthermore, the advanced data extraction techniques they are employing have only emerged in the last two years, with the ability to access partial social security numbers becoming feasible for consumers only in 2023, largely due to the prevalence of data breaches.
