TikTok is ordered to cease operations in Canada because of "national security risks."
The Government of Canada has announced that it has banned TikTok from operating in any capacity in the country. The restriction follows national security issues raised concerning TikTok and its owner, ByteDance.
The measures introduced by the government will mean that Tik Tok will ‘wind up’ its business in Canada. Nevertheless, the government has not placed a total prohibition of access to the application in question.
The measures introduced by the government will mean that TikTok will ‘wind up’ its business in Canada. Nevertheless, the government has not placed a total prohibition of access to the application in question.
The order was preceded by a national security assessment which consisted of information gathering from several agencies. This review asserted possible hazards that would compromise the security of Canada. Countries within the apparatus had already taken measures to prevent the use of TikTok on devices owned by individuals in the government.
However, this announcement from Canada is timely as such measures have been initiated in the United States. Not Long ago, for instance, US lawmakers passed a law whose implications could mean that millions of users of Tiktok in the country may no longer access it.
Storms Threats claimed by US politicians are among those related to national security and stem from the parent company of the application in question, which is Chinese. To ease these fears, Tiktok has taken an aggressive step to launch a direct opposition to the country policy concerning Tiktok bans.
In reaction to the order to close in Canada, a representative of TikTok stated that the company would appeal. They stressed that halting operations would mean hundreds of Canadians losing their well-paying jobs. Furthermore, the spokesperson pointed out that no such ban would prevent TikTok users from accessing the platform for the purpose of content creation, nor would it stop the operational activities of businesses.
