TRI and Boston Dynamics collaborate to give the Atlas humanoid robot AI intelligence.
Boston Dynamics teams with TRI to bring AI smarts to Atlas humanoid robot
Recently, Boston Dynamics has also announced that the company is collaborating with the Toyota Research Institute to upgrade the electric Atlas humanoid robot.
This cooperation puts emphasis on advanced artificial intelligence for the robot by making use of AI-based robotic intelligence. TRI will be able to utilize its experience in large behavior models-extremely complex systems set up to help robots learn and adapt. This is somewhat related to how large language models work, like in the popular tools available today including ChatGPT.
Indeed, the TRI has done a great job teaching the robots how to handle ordinary household tasks. According to them, their methods have reached an accuracy rate of 90%, starting after just one night of training. This is quite phenomenal and proves that TRI is really capable of learning in robots. Recently, a team from TechCrunch visited the facility at Bay Area belonging to TRI, where they could see these technological advancements themselves.
Boston Dynamics is highly regarded for its work in hardware development, especially its famous robot named Spot. It is far more challenging to design robots that could independently execute complex tasks, which requires continued research and efforts. Robert Playter, CEO of Boston Dynamics, expressed enthusiasm about working with TRI. This will speed up the process of creating more versatile humanoid robots, he added.
The ultimate goal of the effort is to build a machine that can think and learn like a human, true general intelligence. Hardware for robots has come a long way, but attaining artificial general intelligence is nonetheless one of the more difficult challenges. Boston Dynamics has expanded what systems like Spot can do by introducing SDKs that allow these robots to perform many more types of tasks. However, true artificial general intelligence will be attained only after further research and innovation.
