In Abu Dhabi, Uber introduces its first global robotaxi service.

Uber has launched its first-ever international robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – a major landmark in the evolution of transportation. This new service has come to life through the collaboration of WeRide, one of the largest players in the autonomous vehicle space.

Now, customers can easily book rides in self-driving cars through Uber’s app: user-friendly, and cost-effective travel. At the start of the service, however, every unit will have a safety driver within, assuring every passenger of a secure and comfortable ride experience when using the service. By 2025, the two giants intend riding into the future entirely hands-free.

WeRide, Clanton operators of driverless vehicles licensed in countries, such as UAE, Singapore, China, and the US, continues its part in the partnership with Uber to Abu Dhabi. WeRide kicked off in the UAE in July 2023 after receiving permission to test and operate its autonomous vehicles on public roads and since that time, the robotaxis of WeRide are available for usage in Abu Dhabi using their TXAI app.

Indeed, the partnership established by Uber with WeRide is part of the broader ambition Uber has. The ambition, in simple words, is to become a one-stop shop for all autonomous vehicle wayfairing across the globe. After disabling their artificial intelligence for self-driving vehicles in 2020, Uber put their resources in arranging collaborations and alliances with some of the major players in the autonomous vehicle industry. The strategy was beautified with collaboration with companies like Cruise, Waymo, Motional, Avride focusing on passenger services, and Serve, Cartken, Nuro for delivery logistics.

The start of the robotaxi proves there is a commitment to determine ways to present newer solutions that can be used in addressing most modern mobility problems while catering to the greater appetite of commercial enterprises in coping with the rapid development of autonomous technologies-from driverless ones to traffic reconstructions that are all but common in urban settings. Uber and WeRide are working themselves into the driver’s seat when it comes to getting into the fully driverless stage in the next two years, clearly positioning them at the front line of this transportation revolution in cities around the world.
