WhatsApp will soon help you spot misinformation – here's how

A new adjustable feature is being introduced by WhatsApp to assist users in checking the credibility of images received. This tool is intended to prevent the potential spread of fake news and manipulated photographs on the application.

With this advancement, users will now be able to perform Google Images’ reverse image search while still being inside the WhatsApp app and search for images that they believe are fake, altered, or simply have different consequences and contexts than what is being shared.

This particular feature was explored in detail in an investigation of the WhatsApp Android application’s beta versions, exposing its current presence within it. As of now, there are no reported statements suggesting that release of the beta form of this tool for iPhones will be carried out in the foreseeable future. In order to access this recent addition the user has to go to the specific message, tap the picture within that message and then open the menu options for that picture. After this, the user should click search on the web in order to initiate the Google reverse image search.

Still, it should be understood by the users that while this function can help out in providing the context, it does not mean that all the searches will bring forth information that relates to the image. The extent to which all this works is primarily dependent on the workings of Google reverse image search and other images related to the targeted image. Also, it should be appreciated that this function is partly concealed in the options menu, which means it will take time before it is adopted as part of how users engage with images that are sent via WhatsApp.

There are also primary systems that protect the users’ confidential information; thus, messages sent through WhatsApp remain end-to-end encrypted. Hence, image verification for users is possible without tampering with any private chat. Generally, this new addition is significant in assisting users in the past of images in as much as the issue of images being craftily doctored to mislead people has arisen.
