X will let persons you’ve blocked read your posts

Your blocked users can now view your public postings but cannot engage with them.

X will now allow users to see posts from accounts they have blocked. In a statement made on Monday, X owner Elon Musk clarified that the “block function will prevent that account from interacting with you, but it will not stop them from viewing public posts.”

At present, X shows a “You’re blocked” notification when an individual attempts to access the profile of someone who has blocked them. This feature not only restricts access to all posts but also blocks visibility of replies, media, followers, and the following list of the blocked account.

A source from X informed The Verge that this modification is being implemented because users can already view posts from blocked accounts when using a different account or when logged out. However, several staff members at The Verge, including myself, have observed that X does indeed restrict access to a blocked profile when logged out.

Musk has expressed his strong disapproval of the block feature. Last year, he remarked that the function “makes no sense” and suggested it should be replaced with a more robust form of mute. He even hinted at the possibility of eliminating the ability to block users entirely, except in the case of direct messages.

Although X’s block feature will still prevent an individual from engaging with another user’s posts, it will allow them to view those posts, which could facilitate continued harassment by malicious actors towards their victims.
