Apple is set to introduce its own 5G modem with the iPhone SE 4.

The low-end device is expected to be available next year.

Apple is ready to introduce a renewed iPhone SE, marking the return of the company to the lower-end smartphone segment since 2022. The device will be important not just because of its price accessibility, but also as a tactical platform that will apply to Apple in touting its in-house 5G modem technology.

Giving this domain of technology a little more stamp, Apple had invested heavily in acquiring the smartphone modem division of Intel for a whopping $1 billion back in 2019. However, at the time of writing this book, no such devices have yet been rolled out that integrate the modems developed by its in-house engineering teams.

The fact is, that Apple and Qualcomm have always had a contentious relationship. This was duly highlighted when Qualcomm filed its 2017 lawsuit against Apple. The case entailed the infringement of several patents related to key elements in Apple’s smartphones: internet connectivity, battery optimization, graphical processing capability, and efficiency in-app data downloads. The dispute ended when Apple agreed to settle, paying certain royalties, signing a six-year licensing agreement, and inking a multiyear supply deal for Qualcomm wireless chipsets. Indeed, this settlement has seen Apple continue to use the advanced 5G modems from Qualcomm in its devices.

The coming iPhone SE 4 probably features design elements very similar to the iPhone 14. This indeed is a new pivot into design for the line of iPhones known as SE. Advanced performance is likely to be expected from this model, driven by technologies in Apple Intelligence that shall enrich user experiences through higher performance and efficiency. Notably, it’s going to sport Face ID sans a traditional home button, as previous models had. It will also boast advanced camera systems, including a 48MP wide sensor and a 12MP front camera that also meet the specifications of the iPhone 15.

The launch of the iPhone SE 4 would take place next year, and it’s more than likely that at this time of year, it would fall around spring. This would not only be a huge moment in product positioning at Apple but a major step toward greater independence in modem technology, hence the new innovative ways that the company has concerning mobile connectivity.
