Elon Musk's X is now banned in Brazil

Access to X has been restricted by internet providers in Tanzania amid political unrest.

This decision follows a conflict between Musk and Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who had previously mandated that X eliminate content promoting false information. Musk and his team labeled the judge’s demands as “censorship orders.”

Recently, Musk criticized the judge on X, referring to Moraes as an “evil dictator.”

Earlier this month, X ceased its operations in Brazil, claiming that the judge threatened to arrest X representative Rachel Nova Conceicao if the company did not adhere to the content removal requests.

Although X has withdrawn from Brazil, the platform remains accessible to users in the nation. On Wednesday, Brazil’s Supreme Court instructed X to designate a legal representative in the country within 24 hours. If this requirement is not met, X stated Thursday night warning of a possible ban.

“We anticipate that Judge Alexandre de Moraes will soon order X to be shut down in Brazil due to our refusal to yield with his unlawful orders to censor political adversaries,” the statement indicated.

Losing its Brazilian user base could significantly impact X, as the platform enjoys popularity in the country, with millions of Brazilian users contributing to its monthly active user count.

According to the New York Times, many accounts that Judge Moraes ordered to be suspended were linked to supporters of Brazil’s former right-wing president, Jair Bolsonaro. Some of these accounts raised questions about the legitimacy of Brazil’s 2022 election results, which Bolsonaro lost.

Brazil mandates that tech companies maintain a legal representative within its borders to operate. The country banned platforms like Telegram in 2022 for not complying with local regulations, although Telegram has since resumed its services in Brazil.

On Thursday, Starlink, a company linked to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, announced that Brazil’s Supreme Court had put a hold on its finances. According to Starlink’s statement, this action was taken by the judge after concluding that the company should cover fines related to Musk’s X.
