Crypto CEO kidnapped in Toronto and released after paying $1 million ransom.
After the payment of $1 million ransom, the kidnapped Crypto CEO from Toronto was released.
The event on Wednesday where a certain individual who happens to be the CEO of WonderFi, a major Canadian cryptocurrency company, was kidnapped has caused quite a stir. As reported by CBC, Dean Skurka was kidnapped during rush hour in Toronto whilst going about his business.
He was, according to onlookers, shoved into a car in broad daylight, letting out chaos in the downtown area. He was also held for a short while but thankfully rescued since he was not harmed. However, before his release, he was coerced into wiring his captors a massive sum of one million dollars, which appears to be in Canadian currency.
As Skurka joins the growing list of victims of violence in the world of cybermoney, this incident leaves a lot to be desired. This edition bears the statistics of the security firm, which indicates that this is the 171st assault within the context of cryptocurrency crime. Such numbers justify the fears that individuals involved with cryptocurrencies are under.
Curiously, only a day before the abduction and hostage taking occurred, WonderFi released its financial results for the third quarter. The firm did quite well, as it reported $41 million CAD generated in revenues for the past nine months, which demonstrated the company’s expansion within the highly competitive crypto landscape. The crime also came unfortunate for the criminals, as their Bitcoin peaked at an all-time high of $76,000, the highest tranche it had ever reached.
WonderFi transcends a typical cryptocurrency company and has managed to attract the endorsement of celebrities such as Kevin O’Leary, the Shark Tank show co-host. They are also among the most prominent publicly traded bitcoin firms in Canada, as stated by Informa.
