Figure AI outlines a strategy to increase the safety of humanoid robots at work.
Figure AI outlines workplace humanoid robot safety plan.
Humanoid robots, an ever-greater presence in many workplaces, are often overlooked regarding safety issues. To combat this, Bay Area-based robotics company Figure AI is establishing a new division, the Center for the Advancement of Humanoid Safety.
This center will study only safety challenges arising when a robot works with a human. The physical design of humanoid robots, sending off waving toys, lumbering and large, with heavy metal frames, presents certain risks for injury to human workers.
At this moment, OSHA lacks extensive regulations regarding safety in automated environments. Figure AI intends to plug that gap with rigorous research and testing. Stability of robots, detection of humans in nearby areas, and the safety of AI-powered behaviors will be the center’s major focus. These give any working environment insight into accident prevention and treatment of worker safety.
Transparent communication will be maintained by Figure AI; every few months, updates will be put forth. The updates will indicate the testing modes and amendatory measures taken to offset manageable risks. By sharing triumphs as well as failures, the center hopes to bridge the existing safety gap in the industry. This accomplishment might pave the way for a day in which robots are safely introduced into households for use alongside their human users.
