GPT 5, also known as Orion, OpenAI’s most potent and near-AGI LLM to date, will shortly be released.

OpenAI to launch GPT 5 aka Orion soon, their most powerful, closest-to-AGI LLM yet

OpenAI is preparing to launch the Orion or GPT-5 large language model. This large language model can be described as a quantum leap into the future of artificial intelligence, with major steps toward what is called artificial general intelligence, or AGI. The date for launching GPT-5 is said to be early in 2025, and it promises a number of major improvements compared to the older models.

The noticeable improvements include the enlarged context window, whereby the model will consider more information in a single instance. It shall improve its comprehension and response to complicated queries. GPT-5 will also boast of a much larger knowledge base, translating to wider access to information and data that were not previously available. This contributes to better reasoning capabilities, hence good answers.

With GPT-5, another huge step forward will be the improvements made in its multimodal aspects. Starting from processing and generating pure written text, it will then go on to being able to work with audio and images simultaneously. This opens up completely new ways of how such a model could be used in a variety of applications, therefore enabling richer and more interactive experiences.

While these adjustments have been made, scholars are quick to remind us that GPT-5 is still far from true AGI—the full potential. While more powerful, the model will simply not understand and be as adaptable as that of a human being.

When GPT-5 is released, it is not likely to be made freely available to the public. Instead, OpenAI may release it to its most valued partners first, such as Microsoft, to develop services like Copilot. This uses similar ways of deployment as what happened with earlier models, such as GPT-4o, which were more enterprise-solution-focused rather than providing direct access to consumers.
