Sophia the Robot: A Glimpse into the Future of AI

Since her introduction back in 2016, Sophia, the android robot from Hanson Robotics, has received wide international interest. Thanks to her human-like form coupled with the capacity to hold a rudimentary conversation, she is perhaps one of the more sophisticated AI-based robotics units to date.

This is augmented by her “frubber” skinned face, which allows her to move emotions and make eye contact; however, rather than the pleasant features of this feminine robot, her looks can also exhibit the uncanny valley effect, which is the terrifying feeling of something almost human but not quite.

The capabilities of Sophia’s AI integrate machine learning and natural language processing, making it possible for her to hold conversations, answer questions, and even engage in philosophical discussions. Nonetheless, even though she is capable of animating fascinating replies, her interaction sounds more like a mechanical recital than a real conversation where emotions are engaged.

When it comes to abilities, Sophia’s construction still has its limitations. She cannot even walk or undertake actions such as a fully operational robot, but this points to considerable advancement in relations with robots.
