The fluffiest robot of CES 2021 is back thanks to Casio
Casio has just opened pre-orders for the Moflin, a new robotic plush toy with artificial intelligence. It’s designed with emotional interaction in mind and was made with Vanguard Industries, a Japanese startup specializing in advanced robotics. The Moflin has been specially engineered to function as an emotional support companion be cuddled for comfort and as a companion, much like one would do with any other pet.
Each Moflin unit is unique and possesses its very own personality and mood traits, changing over time. The robotic plushie comes in two colors that appeal to different aesthetics: soft gray and light blonde. Reportedly, customers will start seeing their Moflin units ship on November 7th, thus making it one of the highly desired product launches among enthusiasts in robotics and emotional support technology.
Probably the most striking feature in Moflin, though, is the development of its personality through interaction with its owner. For example, the robot will pick up on how it is being treated; it responds well to gentle touches, such as cuddling and talking to it. This allows for a unique experience with the user, as no two Moflins are ever alike.
Design-wise, Moflin further cedes ground to Bluetooth to help extend the functionality of Moflin. Moflin charges in a specially designed nest, furthering the illusion of having a real pet and enriching the user experience. The fur covering of the robot is removable for easy washing, in an attempt to maintain the hygiene of the Moflin for daily use.
Moflin’s dream started in 2020 when crowdfunding campaigns launched on Kickstarter and Indiegogo blew up with a lot of interest and support in favor of their idea. It wasn’t until late 2023 that the first units shipped to those supporters. With Casio now manufacturing and distributing Moflin, the company aims to iron out the process and reach even more consumers. Because of that, Casio’s involvement marks one of the most major steps toward making such robotic companions widely available to ordinary consumers looking to technology for emotional support.
