WhatsApp will include a voice message transcription feature.

WhatsApp to introduce voice message transcription feature

This is a new feature that will be available soon on WhatsApp, owned by Meta, that converts voice messages into written text. The feature is expected to be rolled out worldwide within the next few weeks.

One of the most important aspects of this feature is the fact that it works completely on the user’s device without sending the personal messages anywhere else to be listened to by anyone. The feature presently has a few language offerings.

It transcribes voice notes into English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian for Android users. It also supports English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, Arabic, Danish, Finnish, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, and Thai languages on iOS 17.

By pressing and holding the voice message and then selecting Transcribe, users can transcribe a voice message. It will keep improving over time to increase usage of this feature. However, it’s a challenging task for many applications. For example, a tool called Whisper that performs transcription for OpenAI frequently fails in its transcriptions.

Likewise, last year, Apple unveiled an equivalent for its Messages app and, in March, said its podcast app would similarly offer automatically generated transcripts for episodes shortly after they are released.
