Up until recently, regulators in the US had just completed and implemented a set of regulations pertinent to “powered lift” aircraft themselves. That move will open the door to swing open on the creation and possible launch of commercial air taxi services.
The new regulations address aircraft with characteristics from both airplanes and helicopters. This is important due to the different work various companies are doing in creating affordable electric-powered options for air travel.
These new rules represent the first new class of civilian aircraft to enter the marketplace since the development of helicopters made those available to civilian use in the 1940s. Of course, these regulations go beyond carrying passengers, also paving the way for novel means of delivering cargo. The rules also detail standards for pilot certification and define minimum safe altitudes to fly these new classes of aircraft.
These new regulations mean that startups in this burgeoning “electric vertical take-off and landing” industry will soon reap major dividends. For example, Supernal, a Hyundai subsidiary, expects to offer its air taxi services before the close of 2028. On the other side, the German startup Volocopter is working aggressively to obtain certification for its air taxi services by the end of this year.
This would surely be the regulatory framework going to make the developments in urban air mobility take yet another leap forward and open a gateway to newer modes of transportation.
