Verizon announces an experimental partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink, which could change the future of internet connectivity. It seeks to find how satellite-based internet can be integrated as a valuable adjunct to Verizon’s own existing 4G and 5G networks, perhaps granting up-to-speed internet to those in areas most remote.
What’s the Big Deal?
Starlink has hit a home run for providing platform-steady internet for large gaps of people in various corners of the world. That has been possible because Starlink is powered by a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to achieve faster and lower-latency internet than traditional satellite internet services. Currently, Verizon is making use of the technology to ramp up its service delivery.
The beta program is designed to support a path in combining Starlink’s satellite internet with Verizon’s wireless network. This means better coverage in rural areas, more reliable connectivity during natural disasters, and better coverage in hard-to-reach areas. This alliance could lead to fewer dead zones with faster download speeds even where traditional cell towers have been inadequate for the Verizon customer.
Why This Matters
This alliance is a milestone in connecting the digital divide. Millions of rural and remote areas are still not getting fast and reliable internet, and this partnership could change the game for them. In addition, now, with satellite-terrestrial network integration, a new standard in connectivity would emerge, offering a seamless experience whether you are in a bustling city or staying at a remote mountain cabin.
What’s next?
At this point, beta has started with a few selected customers and companies. The details are still obscure, but early indications appear to be promising. Should the partnership succeed, it is expected to accelerate the adoption of satellite-terrestrial hybrid networks, not just for Verizon but for the entire industry.
There is no question about it: as the news continues to surface, connectivity will be getting sharper and swifter. Watch this space. As Verizon and Starlink continue to stretch their hard-fought boundaries, this very space is bound to impart some important updates in the near future.
